Born in Belgium in 1952, Elizabeth Van der Voort was fortunate enough to study art with Fred Jocqué, now director of the Belgian Academy. After studying for three further years at the H Graf Institute she went on to study in Antwerp for another three years at the St Lucas Institute.
Betty Van der Voort’s exquisite still life paintings are quiet and full of the symbolism and beauty of the subject. Her works transcends period and style and we find that it appeals to collector of all the tastes, as her paintings look perfect in both traditional and very modern environments.
Her Belgian background has honed both Van der Voort’s use of colours and spaces where craft and fine colour sense are as natural as breathing. She believes strongly in Manet’s words: “A painter can say all he wants to with fruit..still life becomes suddenly very alive and vibrant”. Just the absolute form of the fruit or the abstract expressionism of the colours, sometimes oversized on the canvas with quick brushwork, captures the subtle effects of light.
